Excerpt From "Worried Sick (NYT 6/24/08) Ending one's own life raises great issues in moral relativism, as great as does ending the life of another. Prolonging life also raises issues in moral relativism. Should we go to lengths to prolong all life, or just life we deem sufficiently high in quality?

The millstone of boomer milestone (Meghan Daum L.A. Times 5/25/08) There are an estimated 76 million boomers (10,000 babies a day on average, born between 1946 and 1964), while we Xers (born between 1965 and 1982) number a paltry 48 million. So boomers set the tone for everyone. Their tastes, needs and values are considered America's default setting. They turn 60, and it warrants magazine covers. They get a cold, and the world sneezes with them.

Whatever Happened to (the good kind of) States' Rights? (Josh Cohen NYT 5/23/08)
The Bush administration and its Congressional allies have helped their friends in industry by enacting weak environmental, health and consumer regulations — and arguing that they wipe out more robust state protections.
The 2003 Medicare law was a disturbing case in point. It blocked states from regulating most abuse by private Medicare insurance plans — an area the administration is not properly policing. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which represents insurance regulators in all 50 states, has protested that its members no longer have the authority they need to protect sick, elderly consumers.

Is
the FDA correct in approving drugs to treat
fibromyalgia?
I can't help but wonder why the Federal Drug Administration is so anxious to approve a drug whose risks outweighs its benefits. Is it because of the influence of special interest groups? The target audience for the new drug is middle aged women. The disease is fibromyalgia, although whether or not it is a disease is still being debated. Is fibromyalgia a disease that needs to be medically treated? Or is it simply a new way for the drug industry to make more money?
