We are primed to think of love in old age with distaste. This is beginning to change. Part of the reason for the change is an increase in life expectancy, and the aging of a generation that is sexually liberated. As this group is showing, the need for intimacy does not die just because someone is old. This persistence of the need for intimacy is beautifully demonstrated by Former Justice O’Connor’s husband’s ability to find romance and her reaction to it. O’Connor is thrilled that her husband of 55 years, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, is so content. According to experts, that’s one the differences between mature love and young love. Young love wants to be happy. Old love wants the other person to be happy.
